IHE, integrating the healthcare industry, is a new approach to data processing in hospitals, which has been in place since 2001. The object of this initiative is to facilitate exchanges between different applications (different softwares), together with the standardization of both in-house and external exchanges.

HL7 is an international organization, the object of which is the definition of a standard exchange format for HISs (hospital information systems). The resulting objective is therefore to facilitate the exchange of non-uniform data.

XML, eXtensible Markup Language, is a generic markup language. This language has established itself as a reference standard. This language allows documents to be formatted, with the separation of form and content.

PACS, Picture archiving and communication system, is a system for the connection of all digital imaging facilities, together with the archiving and redistribution of results to the various hospital departments.

DICOM, Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine, is a communication and archiving standard for medical imaging. This file format is a reference standard in the field of medical imaging. The definition of DICOM Pathology (for pathology and haematology) is currently in progress, and should be completed by 2009-2010.

LIS, laboratory information system, is a data processing application which manages the organization of a laboratory, from the receipt of samples through to the drafting of reports. This software supplies contextual information for the examination concerned (identity, prescribing department, date of sampling) and allows the automatic indexing of images.

IMS, image management system, is a data processing application for the management of the circulation of images generated in the laboratory.
